MINAS

 

El origen de la ciudad de Guanajuato fue, el descubrimiento de las fabulosas minas de plata, que la convirtieron a fines del siglo XVIII en el principal productor de ese metal entonces conocido a nivel mundial. Los primeros hallazgos están envueltos en un halo de leyenda del que es difícil distinguir la realidad de la fantasía. No obstante, no parece haber duda que fue en el año de 1548 cuando se empiezan a trabajar los primeros tiros de minas en Rayas y Mellado; y que es ese mismo año cuando desde estos tiros se descubre la famosa veta madre de Guanajuato. Esta prodigiosa veta corre a lo largo de los cerros que limitan la cañada guanajuatense por el norte y el nororiente, dejando en la superficie terrena una constelación de minas, tiros y bocaminas, que constantemente persiguen el quebrado trayecto de la veta.

Guanajuato had its beginnings in the discovery of prodigious silver mines, which at the end of the eighteenth century turned the city into the largest silver producer known up to that time. The first discoveries are shrouded in legend, making it difficult to distinguish reality from fiction. However, there seems to be no doubt that it was in the year 1548 that work began on the first mineshafts of the Rayas and Mellado mines, and it was in the same year that the famous mother lode of Guanajuato was discovered. This generous vein runs through the hills that border the city to the north and northeast, and it has left on the surface a constellation of mines and mineshafts channeling downward to catch the vein in its sinuous trajectory.
